Summits on the Air (SOTA) is an award scheme for radio amateurs and shortwave listeners that encourages portable operation in mountainous areas. SOTA has been carefully designed to make participation possible for everyone - this is not just for mountaineers! There are awards for activators (those who ascend to the summits) and chasers (who either operate from home, a local hilltop or are even Activators on other summits).
This is Jonathan VK6PTU website blog who currently operates mobile near Perth and recently commenced portable operation using a Buddipole antenna.Jonathan uses a Yaesu FT450-AT transceiver with 100 watts of power output. When in the car he uses an Outbacker Perth multi-band vertical antenna which works well but finds it hard to compete with stations using beam antennas etc. Jonathan like many in the realHFmobile group enjoys the thrill of seeing which countries he can work from his car!Jonathan mainly operates on 20, 15 and 10 meters, preferring to use 10 meters when the band is open.
No matter what aspect of portable Amateur Radio you enjoy it is hoped that you will find the appropriate link on the page.
